How often should you update your Career Portrait?

There are many good reasons to update your professional headshot. It could be that you simply don’t like the photo any longer. Or maybe the clothes you are wearing in the photo are a little out of date. It’s a matter of preference.

And it’s especially important if you no longer look like your photo. When someone is meeting you for the first time in person, but has seen your professional headshot online, there is an expectation. Violating this expectation with a photo of yourself that’s 10 years old (and looks nothing like you) harms trust in the new relationship.

Remember, you don't get second chances to make a first impression, so make sure you show yourself in your best possible light. A professionally taken headshot is vital!

Rachel Moore & Sean Blackmoore

Rachel's story has touched our hearts.

Thank you Rachel for sharing your Love Story with us!

Sean, my fiance and I have been together for 9 1/2 years, since I was a freshman in high school.  It was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!

Sean is originally from New Orleans Louisiana, but has lived here for quite some time.  However, he does still have a lot of family still living in New Orleans.  Our first vacation together...and my first vacation out of state, was to New Orleans to visit Sean's family.

I started off as a little red headed girl who did not eat anything.  Now I can proudly say I was turned into a Cajun and wouldn't have it any other way.  Sean and his family have trained me well!  This year is 10 years since we first got together and I am happy to say our 10 years is going to fall on our wedding day June 27th of this year.

Sean proposed to me on Christmas eve, shortly after I gave birth to our perfect amazing son Easton on Thanksgiving.  Not all relationships are perfect, but I would have to say ours is pretty close to perfect!  Sean in my best friend and would not have it any other way.  I cannot wait to marry my best friend and amazing father to our son in June!

How to Choose What ToWear For Your Career Portrait

Color Choices, Textures and Styles

When you get ready for your workday, you probably don't have to put a lot of thought into what you will wear.  After all, you are familiar with your company's culture and know your schedule for the day, so deciding which suit or outfit to wear for the day is familiar territory.

But what about when your professional image is being captured in a photograph?  I advise you to be comfortable and wear clothes you like that also fit your professional branding.  Does that fit about half your closet?  Let's narrow down your options a bit more.

When choosing what colors to use in your career portrait, remember that contrasting colors photograph well.  Also consider your skin tone.  While some editing is done it is advised to stay away from wearing colors that don't compliment your skin tone. If you have more of a yellow skin tone, avoid greens and yellows.  If you have a rosy undertone, avoid reds for your best photo shoot.

Color choices are also dependant of your profession and what image you want to convey.  Ususally solid color shirts work best but there are always exceptions to that rule.  Contrasting fabrics and textures also photograph well.  For example, solid jackets over a colorful shirt for ladies.

Also keep in mind that headshots are often cropped in close so be aware of your neckline ladies.  V-necks tend to elongate the neck but a deeper V may not look right in a professional shot if it barely shows up in the end photograph.

Clothes that fit

This may seem obvious, but wearing clothes that fit well is important.  If your shirt is too tight or short and you will be tugging on it constantly to feel comfortable, then choose something else to wear.  Not only will a tight shirt not look right, your discomfort and potential insecurity will show up in your photograph.

At the same time, however, don't be afraid to wear fitted clothes.  Fitted clothes look a lot better than baggy clothes.

It's hard to put into words what Brad Hawks has captured here. One encompasses the stages of my life. My past, my present, my faith, my future. The other he embraces my passion. All I have lived and felt is here in these two photos. But Without the love and support of my family and friends. These images would be non-existent
Thank You my friend for this incredible gift

What Does A Professional Career Portrait Do For You?

A professionally taken career portrait shows people that you care about the details, and how you appear to others.  It looks professional, captures you in a positive light, and creates a good first impression.

Your professional headshot often makes the first impression to potential clients before meeting them in person. Therefore, your professional headshot should always be up to date. Think about it. When someone meets you in person for the first time after only seeing images of you online or in ads, do you want them to think “Wow, she looks about 20 years older!” or “He looks nothing like his ad!” Of course you don’t want to hear those things. I mean, really, who wants to look older?  When clients meet you for the first time, they want to feel like they already know you or at least know what you look like.

My suggestion would be to update your headshot about every 18 months. However, there are a couple exceptions to that rule. If you’ve changed your hair in a drastic way (new cut, color, etc), had a major change in weight, or for men, if you’ve decided to grow (or shave off) a little facial hair I wouldn’t wait until those 18 months rolled around again.

Go and take a peek at your image on your business card, online ads and your website. Do the images accurately represent how you look today? If not, let’s change that. Book a time to update your headshot today. Use it as an excuse to pamper yourself for a day! Get your hair and makeup done by someone you trust, and feel great about the images online or in ads that represent you and your unique brand.

For only ***$125, Hick's Portrait Studio will give you a professional career portrait that you will be proud to use.  It is well worth the investment!

Remember, a professional image is more that just a photo.  It's an image that will instill confidence and trust.
